Bursting Star Block
May 2025

Block Overview
The eight-point star is made up of 16 blocks; 12 are half-square triangles; four are just
basic one patch. The finished size is 16”

Fabric Requirements
COLORS: –
Star A & B – 2 values of the same color, or
Adjacent colors;
Background – a low volume grey/white or white
fabric.
AMOUNT: –
You’ll need no more than 1⁄4 yard of each
Cutting:
Background –
4 – 4 1⁄2 squares (for corner blocks)
4 – 5” squares (for HST’s)
Fabric A and B –
4 – 5” squares (for HST’s)

Assembling:
★ Create 2 sets of A/B half-sq triangles
○ Right sides together
○ Draw a diagonal line corner to
corner
○ Sew 1⁄4” from both sides of the
drawn line
○ Cut on line
○ Press Open HST; trim to 4 1⁄2”
★ Create 2 sets of A and background
half-square triangles.
○ Right sides together
○ Draw a diagonal line corner to
corner
○ Sew 1⁄4” from both sides of the
drawn line
○ Cut on line
○ Press Open HST; trim to 4 1⁄2”
★ Repeat with color B and background.
★ Press well!!! And assemble as shown.

April 2025 Block Lotto — Disappearing 9 Patch

This block is composed of nine 4 1/2″ blocks. You can choose a combination of solid or print fabrics for a scrappy block.

The only requirements are 1) that the center block be white or white-on-white, and 2) that one of your blocks that does not get cut contain a shade of blue you might find at an ocean beach—such as turquoise blue or blue/green. 

For the remaining seven squares, you may want to think about using a complimentary color scheme. . .or just use multi-color scraps.

Block finishes at 12” x 12”.
